Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) have announced a major leadership change with Ravi Ahuja, currently the Chairman of Global Television Studios and President and COO of SPE, being promoted to President and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
This change will take effect on 2nd January 2025 as Ahuja will take over from Tony Vinciquerra, who has decided to step down as CEO. However, Vinciquerra will remain as non-executive Chairman in an advisory role until the end of December 2025.
Tony Vinciquerra joined Sony Pictures Entertainment in June 2017 and led the company through a period of significant transformation.
During his tenure, SPE saw five consecutive years of profit growth. This success was driven by a stronger film slate, a revitalised television business, and strategic mergers and acquisitions, including the notable acquisition of anime streaming company Crunchyroll in 2021.
Under Vinciquerra’s leadership, SPE also made key decisions, such as divesting most of its international cable networks and opting not to launch a general entertainment streaming service. These moves helped SPE stay profitable amid rapid changes in the media and entertainment industry.
Kenichiro Yoshida, Chairman and CEO of Sony Group Corporation, praised Vinciquerra’s contributions to SPE, and said “extraordinary turnaround at SPE over the last 10 years would not have been possible without Tony’s deep experience and expertise in the entertainment space.”
He also mentioned that Vinciquerra’s strategic decisions were key to making SPE a core part of Sony’s overall entertainment strategy.
Before joining SPE, Vinciquerra held senior roles in the media and entertainment industry. From 2011 to 2017, he worked as Senior Advisor to Texas Pacific Group (TPG) in the Technology, Media, and Telecom sectors.
At TPG, he focused on capital investment, growth opportunities, and the impact of digital and emerging technologies on the distribution and consumption of film and TV content.
Vinciquerra’s career at Fox spanned nearly 10 years, from 2001 to 2011. During his time there, he served as Chairman and CEO of Fox Networks Group, which was the largest operating unit of News Corporation.
The group included Fox Television Network, Fox Cable Networks, Fox Sports, Fox International Channels, and their related online businesses. He also had oversight of Fox Networks Engineering & Operations, as well as News Corporation’s interests in professional sports teams and entertainment venues.
Vinciquerra started at Fox in December 2001 as President of Fox Television Network and was later named President and CEO of Fox Networks Group in 2002, becoming Chairman in 2008. He was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 2009.
Prior to his work at Fox, Vinciquerra held key leadership positions at various media companies. He served as Executive Vice President and COO of Hearst-Argyle Television from 1997 to 2001, and before that, he was Executive Vice President at CBS’s television group from 1995 to 1997.
Vinciquerra also held leadership roles at KYW-TV in Philadelphia and WBZ-TV in Boston, where he began his television career.
